Small Rides, Big Experiences: The Power of Short Bike Tours on Your Travels

Some of the most memorable moments of our recent travels have been two-wheeled adventures: cycling the silent streets of Bangkok, riding through red rock canyons in Utah and pedaling the French countryside. The growing popularity of e-bikes puts short cycling trips within reach for travelers of all ages and experience levels.

Here are some of our favorite pedal-powered experiences:

Bangkok, Thailand

Old Town Bangkok, with its frenetic traffic and ongoing road and renovation projects, seems an unlikely place for a bike ride. But when night falls and traffic slows, exploring the city on two wheels becomes an almost magical experience. Temples and historical sites that were packed with tourists just a few hours ago are now bathed in a quiet, golden glow. The famous flower market switches from bright retail bouquets to exotic garlands of marigolds and orchids for temple offerings. Our nighttime bike tour started at the whimsical Old Capital Bike Inn in the historic Rattanakosin Island area. Several vintage bicycles are parked in the lobby, and a few nights a week, owner Jason leads guests around the city.

Utah, USA

After a couple of days hiking Zion National Park in Utah, we opted to spend a day exploring the park on e-bikes. The main canyon road is closed to vehicle traffic during peak season except for the shuttle buses. That means cyclists can pedal between the river and red rock canyon walls without worrying about traffic. The paved Par’us Trail can also be explored by bike, with views of the Virgin River, the Watchman, and the Towers of the Virgin. Or, combine cycling and hiking by taking the main route and locking up your bike at one of the many trailheads along the way. Outfitters near the entrance rent bikes for a few hours or a full day. Advance registration may be required during peak travel periods.

Versailles and Colmar, France

Biking is a great way to slow down and enjoy the beauty of the French countryside. We combined a trip to Paris with a day-long bike excursion to Versailles. Boutique Bike Tours offers a guided chateau tour with a stop at the Versailles market, a picnic alongside the Grand Canal, and an afternoon biking the extensive palace grounds. In the Alsace region, we opted for a morning bike ride through the quiet vineyards with Bicyclette Go!. Owner Glenn Ford provides electric bikes that make the hilly landscape near Colmar a breeze.

Whether you choose an at-your-own-pace or an organized bike tour, your next vacation can be even better by bike.
